****’s out of four

“The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” is a thriller as intense and as good as “Silence Of The Lambs” The story was incredible and I was excited to see how this plot unfolds. The characters are all very interesting and not what you would expect among first view. The movie goes by so fast you hardly realized that you sat through almost  three hours.

The mystery of this movie begins when a journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) is being sentenced in a few months for a libel case in which he lost. He is hired by a wealthy man to help recover his niece who he believes has been murdered. In researching the case he meets Lisbeth Slander (Noomi Repace). A punk researcher/hacker who is in trouble with the law herself. She has a tendency toward violence of those who mess with her. Lisbeth is the first to uncover a major clue of the case and the two begin their investigation I’m not going to reveal any more about the plot, because it will spoil the fun of this amazing ride.

Subtitled movies are difficult to market in the U.S., especially since an English remake will be made shortly after. I urge those of you who are waiting for the remake to seek the original version out. That way when all of your friends go to see the new version, you can be one up on them. The only disappointment I have is that this movie was released too soon and may have missed the mark to be considered for the best foreign language Oscar next year.

The teaser trailer of this movie is a point of view shot of someone’s central nervous system. It reminded me of the opening credits of “Fight Club” As the camera travels though we hear sounds of what appear to be explosions out in the background. The camera approaches the noise and we see a needle going in and out various places. The camera follows the needle out of the body and we are shown a tattoo studio where an artist is painting a dragon on a girl’s back. The title of the movie appears on screen and without warning some computer data shows up on screen, it scrolls up and than it goes blank. I don’t know who came up with the idea to market the movie that way, but is genius. It could even work as a trailer for the book because I wanted to go out and buy it as soon as I saw it.
