Scorsese's haunted island.

Shutter Island.

Cast: Leonardo Dicaprio, Emily Moritmer
Writers: Dennis Lehane (novel), Laeta Kalogridis (screenplay)

Director: Martin Scorsese.

**’s out of four.

Martin Scorsese loves to work in many different genres although he is best remebered for his gangster movies. One of his best movies in my opinion was his successful remake of “Cape Fear” Now he returns to the land of mystery and suspense with “Shutter Island”

The movie follows Detectives Teddy Daniels (Dicaprio) and Chuck Alue (Mark Ruffalo) as they investigate the disappearance of an inmate at a maximum security hospital for the criminally insane. The woman in question is Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer). A woman who was convicted of drowning her kids. During their investigations Teddy and Chuck get little help from the staff and he starts to unravel clues about the institution.

I’m afraid to reveal any more about the plot although halfway through most of you will have it pretty much figured out. The Story is set in the fifties, but the movie itself looks like it could have been released in the same time period. With its music score that envelops tone and heightens awareness and camera movements that almost play like a William Castle movie this would have been huge back than as it is now. Scorsese loves these types of genre pictures and it is great fun to watch it on the big screen, but the weakness is how the story is executed. Especially near the end when the big secret is revealed. Once you know the mystery there is a flash back that further tells you what you already know. It was a good scene, but they could have easily cut it down a bit. All through watching it I never felt like Teddy was in any real danger. There is one scene where he and Chuck are stuck in a rain storm that I felt worried about him getting wet because his cigarettes would be ruined. The stand out performance in this belongs to Emily Mortimer. She is in this for a very brief period but her role as the deranged mother does not meet any usual stereotypes associated with this kind of character.

“Shutter Island” is not one of Scorsese’s best, but then again I don’t recall him ever making a really bad movie. Unless he decided to do a remake of “Freddy Got Fingered”
