The Weekend Watch 01/13/2012

Friday the 13th has been known as one of  the most unluckiest days ever.  I'm pretty sure Dec 7 1941 and the premiere of "American Idol" are are at a close second.  Usually the movies that premiere in January are nothing that impressive, but what do you think.   Let's have a look.

Beauty and The Beast 3D

If Disney can have a hit with re-releasing "The Lion King".  Why not release this one again.  I think what made that movie  a success in theatres again was because it was not yet available on Blue Ray.  "Beauty and the Beast" however  has already been on the home market for quite some time.  As much as I love this flick, I don't really see the point of releasing it in 3D.  Then again I though the same thing about "The Lion King" and that made tremendous business.

Contraband.

YAWWWWWN.  Man that trailer put me to sleep.  This looks like countless other heist flicks about a former criminal who has to go back into the life he once rejected to save his family.  Is it just me or is Mark Whalberg's girlfriend kind of a bitch in this.  Her dumbass brother gets into trouble with some bad people and she expects her boyfriend to just go out and take care of it.  Never once worrying about the dangers that will happen to him or her.  The action scenes do nothing to impress me either.

The Iron Lady.

I was really hoping for a biopic about female full contact fighters starring Meryl Streep.  Instead we get a drama about Margret Thatcher.  While watching the trailer all I could think about was the 1996 drama "Elizabeth" starring Cate Blanchet.  Both movies seem to be about women talking on an establishment despite obstacles and succeeding.

Joyful Noise.

Queen Latifha and Dolly Parton play Choir directors who want to win a Gospel competition. The grandson of Dolly's character joins and decides to shake things up by adding hip modern songs.  Those types of hit songs you usually find on Kidz Bop.  At least that's the impression I got from it.  I don't know.  If you want a good movie about gospel singers check out Rejoice and Shout .  "Joyful Noise" looks like utter shit.

 Don't Go In The Woods.

I believe a more decent title of this would be "Don't Go In The Theatre".  A bunch of guys go out to the woods to write a good song and while there they meet up with girls and eventually a serial killer. Don't you just hate when that happens. It really puts a big damper on the whole camping experience.  I'm not sure if this is a horror comedy with music.  Or a horror musical with comedy.  Either way I won't be seeing this anytime soon.

Pariah.

This is high on my want to watch flick of 2012.  I'm almost upset that this is being released so soon because it could have gotten some Oscar recognition. The Acting is very good of what I see in this. I will have to keep Adepero Oduye in mind. She is quite remarkable.  The story involves a young women trying to admit to the world and her strict parents that she is gay.   This is one of the best trailers of 2012 so far.

Well have a great weekend everyone.  I will be back Monday with a review of "Carnage" Starring Kate Winslet and John C. Reily, and a Retro review of "The Cook, The Theif, His Wife and Her Lover". Starring Helen Mirren and Professor Dumbledore himself Michael Gambon.
