Cinematic Comforts: 03/20/2012
If you missed these movies in theatres, you can now watch them without ever having to put you clothes on. Unless you are going out to rent or buy them, than some pants and a shit might be a good idea. After that, it's totally acceptable to be naked.
Here are the releases. Click on each title in red to read the full review.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara plays the troubled hacker Lisbeth Salander who helps journalist Mikael Blomkvist(Daniel Craig) solve a 40 year old mystery. This is a petty solid version and I'm glad David Fincher was behind this, but I don't want him to do the other sequels. This would be his fifth time working in the thriller genre. He needs to work in other fields otherwise he's just going to get pigeonholed.
My hat is off to Jason Segal for making this movie. The man obviously has a love for these characters and Jim Henson and for the most part it shows. It still doesn't excuse the fact that I have to wait almost 20 minutes before I see a Muppet appear or the fact that they give Walter(the new guy) more screen time than some of the other veterans. I'm still glad however that people have embraced this movie and I hope they check out some of the original movies and TV shows too.
YES YES YES. This is every movie geeks wet dream, and if you have never seen this or at least know about it. I should revoke your movie card right now. "Battle Royale" is one of my top five favorite action movies of all time and finally after may years. It is now available on Blue Ray. The story about a group of junior high school kids forced to kill each other may seem dark because of their age. But this is more of a war movie rather than a horror flick. The kids in this are just prisoners inside a controlling system and they have to decide if they want to become part of that system or rebel against it. I'm definitely buying this.
Tinkor Tailor Soldier Spy.
I have yet to see this film which is sad because I hear Gary Oldman is very good. Still can't believe the man gets an Oscar nomination for playing a normal guy after years of playing some of the most offbeat and original characters ever put on screen. It also marks the first English Language film from Tomas Alfredson who also directed "Let The Right One In". I hope to see this one soon.
Jonah Hill plays an obnoxious babysitter. I just saved you about five bucks right there.
This is one of the funniest movies out this week, but don't put it on if you are having a lot of people come over to your place. Otherwise you will miss out on some of the great dialogue being spoken by these great actors. Some of you may have a problem with a movie that is just talking but the rhythm of the words are very fresh, very fast and very very funny.
Let me know what you think of this week's picks. I'll see you again next week.
