The Weekend Watch: 05/25/2012

The Summer movie is in full swing as we get a new crop of films that are aching to take that top spot.   Right now "The Avengers" is winning that race, and after I fully understand why.  This is what a blockbuster movie should be.  It was the most fun I had watching a summer flick since "Jurassic Park".   Joss Whedon should have waited to release "Cabin In The Woods" after this one.  I just hope his new project"Much Ado about Nothing"(Yes the one by Shakespeare)  will put something on the poster or trailer about his involvement with this massive franchise. It might even get more people to see it.

As Always I highly suggest you check your local listings before heading out because many of these movies may not be playing in your area

Men in Black 3

Your favorite extraterestial cops are back  in a new adventure that looks to be a much better sequel than their last one.  Making Tommy Lee Jones the comic relief and having Will Smith as the no nonsense type was a really bad idea and I'm glad they went back to what worked in the original.  Actually they are going much further back, and they got Josh Brolin to play the younger version of Mr. Jones' character.   Those moments in the trailer look to be some of the best and I am actually looking forward to seeing this.

Moonrise Kingdom.

This looks damn charming.  A nice simple story with great characters is just the type of entertainment that I want.  Two young lovers run away from summer camp while each of their parents are on a quest to retrieve them. Director  Wes Anderson has a distinct style that I enjoy very much , even if I don't all ways like the final product.   I wasn't too impressed with the last two live action flicks he made after "The Royal Tenenbaums" but he came back strong with "The Fantastic Mr. Fox".   This gets my highest recommendation.

The Chernobyl Diaries.

If you were going to go on a vacation with your friends.  What is the one destination you would want to visit the most?  If  you said Las Vegas or Europe.  You would be wrong because apparently the tourists in this movie thought going to where The Chernobyl nuclear plant exploded would be a much better idea.  Those people should know right away  that this is not going to be a fun vacation spot.  Even without the mutant killers hunting them.

The Intouchables

A friendship is formed between a paraplegic and his younger assistant..  This preview had me smiling the whole way, but it's not something I would want to catch in theatres.  It looks really good, but it's not something that needs to be seen on the big screen

Olso August 31st

Note to studios and other filmmakers.  Just because your trailer features quotes from critics who praise your film.  Doesn't mean audiences are going to have an interest in seeing it if they don't know the basic story is about.  I have watched this preview twice, and I still don't have a clue on what the hell I am watching.  However Variety Magazine and others are calling it great movie so I guess I'll just have to take their words for it.

OC 87: The Obsessive Compulsive, Major Depression,Bipolar,Asperger's Movie.

This is a very impressive project because the person who has made this documentary has a few of these mental illnesses.  His life long struggle to become more normal is all captured by himself with the help of some of his friends.   After watching him conqueror some of his fears, It's really hard for anyone to complain about the trivial problems in our own lives.   I look forward to checking this one out.

Let me know what you think of this week's picks.   I won't be back til tuesday.  Have a great long weekend everybody.

  1. I think Chernobyl Diaries looks to be one of the worst movies this year.

MIB 3 is a guilty pleasure I'm looking forward to. Also, Moonrise Kingdom looks exactly like every other Wes Anderson movie which is a very good thing.

  2. The film I want to see is Moonrise Kingdom but I'm going to have to wait a few weeks for the film to arrive in Atlanta.

  3. I agree Void99. I have to wait a week as well before I can see Moonrise Kingdom but yeah I'll see it.

Alex. From what I have been seeing about MIB 3 it looks decent. I would love to check that one out.

  4. I would've been the first to see Moonrise Kingdom, had it been playing in a theater near me. I hope it will be here within the next few weeks. My local independent theater has it listed so that's a plus. I figured since it was filmed in my state we'd be able to see it first. Doesn't look like it.
