Ted: Quick Movie Review

Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis

Writers: Seth MacFarlane, Alec Sulkin, Wellesly Wild

Director: Seth MacFarlane.

**'s out of four.

The story of a little boy whose stuffed bear comes to life is not an original concept, but Seth MacFarlane takes that idea and turns it into a somewhat raunchy comedy.  Although this movie is rated R and has a lot of language and scenes of sex, it still has the same style and tropes you would expect to see in a family flick and that does help it stand out.  However, it also has the misfortune of ending the joke of a foul-mouthed teddy bear much to early.

The cast is really good and that is my highest praise about this picture.  Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane have great chemistry with each other and all of their scenes together are really funny.  Mila Kunis' character could have been written as just the bitch who wants to break up these two friends, but she is very supportive and actually likes Ted a lot.  She just wants to start a new life without a third wheel hanging around all the time.  The movie also features a few great cameos that I won't spoil, but are very funny.

The only issue I have about this flick is at the end; nothing ever gets resolved and the characters don't make any changes for the better.  There is a scene close to the finish where I could see Mr. Wahlberg's character start to make some changes, but it's completely ruined by turning into one of the most tired and over-used movie endings ever seen. There are also two characters, a creepy toy collector (Giovanni Ribisi) and his son, that should have been removed.  They were only added to give the movie an unnecessary third act, although it did have a few moments of good suspense.  It would have been a much more interesting story if they had shown the boy and his teddy bear back in high school and college.  The bear could have shown his friend how to be more confident and help him win the love of Miss Kunis's character.

"Ted" is a movie that you really don't have to see in theaters.  Wait til it comes out on DVD, invite some friends over, grab some beers, and you will all have a much better time watching than if you'd shelled out ten dollars each in the theater.

  1. Your advice to watch this at home with friends and beer is extremely solid Vern. LOL

I thought it was funny enough, but like you I had a lot of issues with some of the cheap stock plot devices, and Ribisi's subplot, etc...

Enjoyable over all though, more than not!

    1. Thanks Fogs. You could also watch this at one of those cinema grill places with cheap beer and watch it there too I guess.

  2. Ah, to chose between teddy bear and Mila Kunis...wait, that's like the easiest choice ever! I will probably catch it on DVD, though I don't know if I will like it as I'm not a fan of Family Guy.

    1. I don't even have to doubt you would chose Mila. ALthough the mere fact that a guy who still sleeps with a teddy bear could land a woman as hot as her is still mind bogleing. Umm Oh yeah because he looks like Mark Wahlberg. Thanks for the comment
