Quick Movie Review: Bernie
Bernie
Cast: Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine
Writers: Richard Linklater, Skip Hollandsworth
Director: Richard Linklater.
** and a 1/2*'s out of four.
A bizarre story about a small town that wants the police to let a resident, Bernie (Jack Black), go free - even though he has killed an older woman (ShirleyMacLaine) and stuffed her body in an over-size freezer. To them, Bernie was one of the nicest people you could ever meet and he did so much more for the community than the old woman ever could. In fact, to this day many of them still don't blame him for what he did.
Jack Black is really good in this and shows that he can actually act, instead of always playing the obnoxious slob who just spews out funny moments every three minutes. I also liked the actual stories told by the real people who lived there and knew Bernie in real life. At the end credits you see Jack Black talk to the real person and even I couldn't believe that he committed these crimes, because he really does seem to be really nice.
There isn't much bad to say about it, but I will mention that it does drag a tad after the actual crime has been committed.

I found the whole story to be another good example on how harsh certain crimes are punished - I mean really, that man was most definetly not a monster. Really liked the movie and all 3 lead performances and the little interviews with the people in the town were fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThank you for commenting. I saw scenes at the end with the real guy talking to Jack Black, and he seemed to be the most nicest guy in the world. I do belive he needs to serve time for his crimes, but it's not like it was planed.
