A Night of Horror with The Vern: Ringu and Night Of The Demons.

So last night I decided to watch two horror films back to back, "Ringu" and "Night Of The Demons".  Both are very different for obvious reasons.  "Ringu" is from 1998 and is in Japanese, while "Night Of the Demons" is from 1988 and is entirely made of cheese.  I like watching horror movies that try to be scary and I enjoy the ones that just want to be fun.  These are not going to be full reviews, hence no cast and crew information, just my general thoughts about them.

Ringu.  (1998)

This was my second time watching this version.  I have seen the American version in theatres and was surprisingly impressed by it.  I went online to read more about it and found out it was a remake.  I tried to find the original everywhere, but it seemed to disappear without a trace.  Just like the cursed VHS tape in the movie.  Later, when the American version was released on home video, the Japanese version also resurfaced (minus any bonus features, because Dreamworks owned the rights and could remove anything they wanted).  Watching it for the first time made me a bit angry that I watched the remake first, because the one thing that I hate the most about American remakes besides the language issue, is the look.  "Ringu" has this sort of grainy look to it where the colors are sort of saturated, and it gives a sickly green hue to it - almost like it's infecting you.  The American version is too clean and while it is the best of the Asian horror remakes,  I felt more scared from the look of the original.

Watching it again tonight, I felt that it didn't hold up as well as I remember.  All the scenes that freaked me out before, only gave me mild goosebumps.  Maybe because it was all those spoofs I have seen of that weird video.  Or it could be I have seen a lot more freaky shit on screen then what was put there.  I still respect it for introducing Americans to Japanese horror, and I also curse it for being the start to all of those fucking horrible remakes.  Unless you have a serious eye problem, reading subtitles should not be that big of a deal.  I will end by saying that if you have never seen this before, check the original one out first, because you will be having a scary good night.

Night Of The Demons (1988)

After watching this, I  found out that a remake had been made and I'm betting the jokes in that version are going to be even worse then the jokes in this one.  The VHS of the '88 version had this quote on the cover:

"Angela is having a party.
Freddy and Jason are too scared to come,
But you'll have a hell of a time"

So these walking high school stereotypes are invited to a Halloween party at a creepy old funeral home, by a girl that no one really has nice things to say about.  You have the nice girl virgin, the douche bag jock, the slut, the comic fat slob, and the token black guy.  Have I mentioned that he is a virgin, too?  Probably because having him hook up with the main girl was just too freaky for white folks to handle back in the day.  Anyways, the girl who invites them over asks if they all could help in a seance, which result in a bunch of demons being released and then one-by-one each kid is possessed until, yes you got it, the two virgins are left to destroy the evil.

Now since this was an '80's R rated movie, it followed the traditional tropes of that genre by showing people having sex, followed by them getting killed.  Some of the nude scenes in this, albeit cool, were completely useless and just in there to have a naked girl on screen (although I'm not complaining).  However, the one part that disturbed me the most was when the little brother surprised his sister in the closet with a camera.  Now, she has been walking around her bedroom for at least five minutes with no panties on while he was in there.  CREEPY.  After she catches him in the closet, he makes a sexual gesture about her tits.  WTF.  It's his damn sister.  I did not like this movie, but found the story interesting enough to at least finish.  The practical effects were nice, but the cheesy acting made me forget about this.  It would be a good one to play for an '80's themed Halloween party.

  1. I haven't seen Night of the Demons so I can't comment on that, although it has been on my list of movies to see for a while now.

As for Ringu - I really do prefer the remake. Ringu seems a little cheap and I'm not a big fan of Japanese acting. The shrill screaming just annoys me! I do appreciate the film for the original story, but the acting talent and directing in the remake is better, in my opinion.
