Quick Retro Review: Rock and Rule (1983)

Rock and Rule.  (1983)

Cast: Paul La Mat, Susan Roman

Writers: Patrick Loubert, Peter Sauder, John Halfpenny

Director: Clive A. Smith

**'s out of four.

A very egotistical, but famous, rock star kidnaps the lead singer of a local garage band- because her voice is the key to help transport a demon from another dimension to this one.  Now, it's up to her fellow band-mates to help set her free and use the power of rock to send the demon back to hell.

One of my  friends posted about this movie on her Facebook page and it's one that I remember seeing the box art for, but have never fully watched it until now.  Released in '83, this animated fable features music by Lou Reed, Debbie Harry and Cheap Trick.  The songs, and some of the characters, were a lot of fun to watch, but the overall story itself is really tired and predictable.

It would have been nice to understand why the bad guy who is named Mok (Don Francks) wants to release the demon into this world.  I understood it was for revenge, but the movie never really addresses why.   I also found the character of Omar (Paul LeMat) to be a major asshole, but since he's got the long swooning '80's hair style, he's going to get the girl at the end.  As for the girl, Angel (Susan Roman), I did find it very funny that her speaking voice sounds nothing like her singing voice- which was done by Debbie Harry of Blondie fame.

Even though the movie is rated PG, I wouldn't suggest anyone younger than 12 watch it.  It features sexual situations and some slight nudity, but it's never overly exploitative either.  The only other feature this director has done is the animated "Pippi Longstocking" movie.
