The Vern Asks:What are some movies that need to be seen?

Hello readers.

Since Award season is off to a good start.  I am going to be starting a new series of reviews starting next week about movies that need to be seen. It's important for me to get your opinions about what films you believe are ones that need to be seen by everybody .  These are not ones that simply entertained you, but ones that got you to think.  It could be an historical biopic of someone or a somber drama on a particular subject.  I won't even discourage any comedies from being on this list either.  I just want to hear about some of your suggestions.  If I use any of your ideas I will link to your site and your review if you have one posted.  I will usually chose the first one from each list unless there any duplicates of which then I will just move down to the 2nd one and so forth.

I plan to start these reviews next week on Thursday and will be posting a new one each day up until the end of December,  Thank you very much for all of  your comments and interest.

  1. Something that jumps out at me would be 12 Angry Men. Made in Dagenham is a recent film which I'd like to see everyone in my county see but I don't know how well it translates across the Ocean. Another for me would be City Lights, still the best romantic comedy ever and over 80 years old.

    1. Thank you Tom those are good choices. I still need to see City Lights. One of these days I'm going to splurge on nothing but Criterion Bluerays

  3. The Unknown (reviewed earlier this year) was one of Lon Chaney's best. Night of the Hunter, with Robert Mitchum as a murderous preacher, is another important film.

    1. I recently saw Night of The Hunter and agree that it is a very good movie that is often overlooked by many. Great ideas.

  4. Bronson (for Tom Hardy's performance), Chopper (for basically the same performance by Eric Bana) based on performance alone (not the greatest movies)... Life is Beautiful is a good one. There has to be more, I just can't think of any right now.

    1. Sorry about the late reply Shane, but I like your choices so far. I never saw Chopper, but I will check it out. Hardy scared me in Bronson. Why he was denied an Oscar I will never know
