The Vern's 2013 Oscar Prediction Special.

Yes my dear and faithful movies fans.

The time has now come for all of us to guess who will be taking home the golden boy known as Oscar.  There have been tons of unexpected praise and snubs when the nominations were announced.  One of those was the unexpected addition of Benh Zeitlin for "Beasts of the Southern Wild", but no love for Ben Affleck for "Argo".  Hell I'm still upset "Cabin in the Woods" did not get a Best Screenplay nom.  "Amour" should not even be considered a movie because of it's lack of conflict within the plot. But I am glad to see Michael Heneke get nominated for Best Director even though it should have been for "The White Ribbon".

I could spend all day on here talking about what I feel should have been praised, but you don't want to hear that.  You are here to read my picks about what I think will win the main categories at The 2013 Academy Awards.

Best Picture.

Beasts of The Southern Wild
Argo
Django Unchained
Les Miserables
Amour
Lincoln
Life of Pi
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty

Who will win.
Argo.

I know many people are predicting "Lincoln" to win because it's a safe choice but I feel that it's a bit too safe.to win. "Zero Dark Thirty" hits on many recent topics that could be  a bit too new for many Oscar voters.  I feel that enough time has passed with the Iran Hostage crises to become fully engaged in that story.  Plus even though I knew the outcome for each movie.  I found the suspense in "Argo" to be that much more intense.

Best Animated Movie.

Brave
Frankenweenie
Pirates: Band of Misfits
ParaNorman
Wreck it Ralph.

Who will win.
Wreck it Ralph.

I'll stand by my statement in saying that the other nominees had better animation, but it's hard to deny the love everyone has for "Wreck it Ralph".

Best Foreign Language Film.

 Amour
A Royal Affair
No
Kon-Tiki
War Witch

Who will win.
Amour.

Of all the nominated foreign features.  Why was the one about slow death the one chosen for best picture. I have not seen any of the other nominated features, and I'm already calling that they are better then "Amour".  Simply for the fact that they have conflicts in their plots and that one does not.

Best Director.

Benh Zeitilin - "Beasts of the Southern Wild"
Michael Heneke - "Amour"
Ang Lee - "Life of Pi"
Steven Spielberg - "Lincoln"
David O Russell - "Silver Linings Playbook"

Who will win.
David O Russell.

I know I'm taking a huge risk with this one, but "Silver Linings Playbook" is really an unexpected heartwarming and funny flick.  It combines moments of heart wrenching drama and gut busting comedy. Sometimes in the same scene. That type of effort needs to be praised.

Best Original Screenplay.

Michael Heneke - "Amour"
Wes Anderson - "Moonrise Kingdom"
John Gatins - "Flight"
Quentin Tarantino - "Django Unchained"
Mark Boal - "Zero Dark Thirty"

Who will win.
Quentin Tarantino

"Django Unchained" was one bad ass enjoyment of a film, but I really enjoyed "Moonrise Kingdom" too. If either of those two movies win I would be very happy.

Best Adapted Screenplay.

Chris Terrio - "Argo"
Lucy Alibar & Benh Zeitlin -  "Beasts of the Southern Wild"
David O Russell - "Silver Linings Playbook"
David Magee - "Life of Pi"
Tony Kushner - "Lincoln"

Who will win.
Chris Terrio

When a movie has me gripping my seat in anticipation.  Even though I know the outcome.  It is a major win in my book.  I am a huge fan of "Silver Linings Playbook" and if my choice looses to that, I will be just fine.

Best Supporting Actor.

Alan Arkin - "Argo"
Robert De Niro "Silver Linings Playbook"
Phillip Seymour Hoffman - "The Master"
Tommy Lee Jones - "Lincoln"
Christoph Waltz - "Django Unchained"

Who will win
Christoph Waltz

The character that Mr. Waltz played is really good and his role should be praised, but the person I secretly want to win is Mr. DeNiro. It was great to see him as a real character instead of just doing parodies of earlier roles he played.

Best Supporting Actress.

Sally Field - "Lincoln"
Amy Adams - "The Master"
Helen Hunt - "The Sessions"
Anne Hathaway - "Les Miserables"
Jackie Weaver - "Silver Linings Playbook"

Who will win.
Anne Hathaway.

I was ready to give Miss Hathaway the award when I first saw the trailer for "Les Miserables".  Compared to the other nominees her performance was just more bold. Although Helen Hunt appearing mostly nude in "The Sessions" was a very bold thing too.

Best Actor.

Daniel Day Lewis - "Lincoln"
Joaquin Pheonix - "The Master"
Bradley Cooper - "Silver Linings Playbook"
Hugh Jackman - "Les Miserables"
Denzel Washington - "Flight"

Who will win.
Daniel Day Lewis.

One of my co hosts from the As You Watch Podcast mentioned that if Mr. Day Lewis doesn't win the Oscar.  His face should be on the penny or the five dollar bill.   I would be just fine with that too.

Best Actress.

Jessica Chastain - "Zero Dark Thirty"
Jennifer Lawrence - "Silver Linings Playbook"
Quvenzhane Wallis - "Beasts of The Southern Wild"
Emmanuelle Riva -  "Amour"
Naomi Watts - "The Impossible"

Who will win
Jennifer Lawrence

I know many others will chose Jessica Chastain for best actress, and her role is very good.  But if I'm judging this on performance alone.  Miss Lawrence just knocks it out of the park.  She has two moments that brought tears to my eyes, and should get praise for holding her own against Robert DeNiro.

I will be back later to list some of the technical awards, but until then enjoy your weekend movie fans.

  1. I think that the best picture race is very close. Argo and Lincoln seem to be neck and neck but I thought Life of Pi was the best of the three.

I'd be really annoyed if Silver Linings gets anything other than Lawrence. I think it's massively overrated.

Amour deserves to win foreign language and a couple more besides.

Hathaway and Day-Lewis seem to be locks but I can't wait to see who wins the other two acting awards.

This year will be the first Oscar ceremony I'll have watched due to not being in work the next day and having access to the correct TV channel. I can't wait.

    1. I heard Life of Pi was amazing and hopefully I can see it next weekend. I don't think Silver Linings Playbook can be praised enough. I love that flick. I'm sad to miss the Lamb meetup but yeah can't wait for the actual award show

    2. I don't think the ceremony will begin until about 2-3am here so plenty of coffee will be required. It also falls on my birthday, well in UK time, so maybe some whiskey too.

    3. I usually turn the Oscars into a drinking game so yeah Whiskey will be involved. Never thought of adding coffee to the mix. Thanks for the idea

  2. I have to say that I think Brave will win the animated nomination. I liked Wreck-It Ralph, but I thought Brave was more cinematic. I think you're probably right on the other ones, though. And if Wreck-It Ralph does win, I won't mind. For one thing, that would make you right, Vern! And I did love Ralph!

    1. You may be right , but based on what Ralph has won before Im choosing that, but yeah I agree the animation is much better in Brave then in Wreck it Ralph

  3. More predictions! Do the ones no one cares about so we can have a drinking game.
