Is 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' a Halloween Movie or a Christmas one?

This is a really brief post in which I ask you the readers a simple cinematic question.  Each season has their fair share of movies to watch and the two that have the most feature films are Halloween and Christmas.  So when "The Nightmare Before....  Oh I'm sorry girl at Hot Topic.  "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas" got released.  I thought it was extremely clever to have a story that involved both holidays, but which one does it fall more under.  Is it a Halloween story because Jack Skeleton along with the rest of the monsters hail from a land called Halloween town.  Or does it fall under Christmas because at the end Jack realizes the true meaning of the holiday.    So what do you think?  Is this movie perfect to watch during marathons of "A Christmas Story"  or does it belong  between sets of " A Nightmare on Elm Street".   Please leave your thoughts and comments below.

Also please check out the latest episode of The We Sing Poorly Podcast where Nick of Your Face, Pat of 100 Years of Movies and guest Steve of 1001 Movies Plus sing poorly about this movie.

Sarah Ward over at On Page and Screen writes a review of  The Golden Globe nominated Film "Frances Ha".

Over on the site  Frame Rates there is a great post about great classics reviewed by a 13 year old.  Check out the review this young person wrote about "Citizen Kane"

Carl from the site Some Films and Stuff writes a great post about the Top Ten Movie Opening Sequences

It was recently Daniel Prinn's birthday and over at his site Daniel's Film Reviews.  He wrote a great review of a Hitchcock movie I have not seen before, but now want to.  "Marnie".

"Nebraska" has been getting lots of love this year.  Especially Bruce Dern's performance.  Brian J Ronan over at DearFilm also agrees and writes a love letter about it as well.

Lars Von Trier's upcoming flick "Nymphomaniac" has been getting both good and bad press and it won't be released in North America until 2014.  Courtney Small over at Cinema Axis has some good points about how there seems to be much focus on the sex rather then the actual story.

  1. I always saw it as a Christmas movie since that's the holiday we actually see them celebrate. But I love this one so much I could watch it during any time of year.

  2. Yeah I did too. Many of my friends say that it is more of a Halloween one, but a few are not a fan of Horror films(not saying this is one) so maybe that's why. Thanks for the comment.

  3. Per IMDB, released on October 29th - so it's a Halloween movie. Is Alien sci-fi or horror? I think Nightmare actually straddles holidays just like Alien straddles genres. Watch it on both holidays just to be safe.

Adrienne just turned it on a couple of days ago, and we just had this conversation ourselves. I had actually never watched it at Christmas time, but since I'm a big old Grinch and can only tolerate three or four indisputably Christmas oriented flicks, maybe I should have.

For the record: A Christmas Story, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and Scrooged are the only Christmas movies I can tolerate. All comedic, go figure.

  4. Does a movie's release date determine what season a movie belongs in. It's a Wonderful Life was released on Jan 7th, and Die Hard was released in July. For the record, all the ones you chose are great.

    1. One of my co-workers says Die Hard is his favorite Christmas movie. He also says all of the Christmas movies I like are cynical. Yeah, probably. lol

  5. Thanks for the link love Vern! Much appreciated.
